Obeying When I Don't Understand
Obeying When I Don't Understand
Walking In Faith is obeying even when I don’t understand it. Hebrews 11:27 says, "By faith [Moses] left Egypt, not being afraid of the king". In Exodus 14, Moses and all the Jews who just left Egypt are caught between a massive sea and the oncoming army. In the middle of the the chaos God says, "cross the Red Sea."
In Fact, all of the men and women mentioned in Hebrews 11 stepped out in faith - even when they didn't understand what they were doing, didn't understand how it would happen, didn't understand the outcome. They just simply obeyed.
In Hebrews 11:8 we discover that Abraham is a classic example of obeying when he didn’t understand. He was about 75 years old, and God asked him to give up all his security – right at an age when Abraham should have been getting Social Security!
God said, I want you to leave. Pick up everything and get ready for the greatest adventure of your life. The scary part of it is God gave Abraham no details.
- Abraham says, "Where are we going?"
- God says, "You’ve never heard of it."
- Abraham questions, "How long is it going to take?"
- God answers, "You’ll find out."
- Abraham asks, "How will I know when I get there?" God replies, "I’ll let you know!"
Have you ever had a conversation like that with God? Sometimes God will tell you to do something, and you’ll think, "There’s no way this is going to work!" Yet, God says, Do it. And guess what? It works!
Homework: What area in your life have you not obeyed because you couldn't figure out the outcome or the timing? What steps do you need to take in order to start obeying ... even when you don't understand?
